Learn From My Mistakes
With over 35 years’ experience as a professional engineer and business owner and together with a master’s degree in business administration, I’ve developed professional expertise in the areas of business strategy, financial management, and information technology. Throughout my career, I have served on various industry association committees and on regional and national boards of directors of these associations. I’ve recently completed a 6 month mentoring contract with Catapult Grey-Bruce
I began my career in 1981 with Harris Rebar, an international construction firm where I was chief engineer from 1991 to 1996 and was part of several large-scale construction projects.
In 1989, I completed an MBA at York University. In 1996, I joined the family business, Kotyck Bros. Limited, a small industrial supply business begun by my grandfather in 1947, where I provided strategic direction and long-term vision, growing the business to 19 employees in two locations in the highly competitive greater Toronto area.
After several expressions of interest by competitors, and no little soul-searching, I sold the business in late 2018 to Emco Corporation, one of Canada’s largest integrated distributors of products for the industrial maintenance and construction industry.
I hope to “give back” to the Georgian Collage “Change the Now” initiative by offering my experience in owning, running, and growing a family business so budding entrepreneurs can learn from my mistakes.
